One of my friends is looking for a match made in heaven. Yeah, by truly connecting the stars and figuring out the compatibility. The guy is a metro sexual, would date women, have a modern outlook on life and career, but would end up rejecting girls on the basis of kundali ! Somehow, i feel a lot of people around us are like this. Irrespective of the educational background or lifestyle, they stick to their deep rooted conventional practices at times of test. Nothing wrong about it, but i sense a disconnect there. You just cant reduce a person to their DTP of birth! Me thinks that it will take atleast one more generation for the real way of life to emerge from this psuedo living. When individuality is born beyond reasons that the person doesnot influence like appearance and kundali.

I had a long talk, rather debate with my friend on how much Hrithik revived acer, Aamir sold Tata Sky or Sharukh pepped up compaq. She was of the opinion that a lot of brands end up signing up celebrities to an extent that it actually leads to a brand image confusion. In some cases, it is deemed unneccessary and in some more, irrelevant. She took up the case of Amitabh for eveready. It is true that a few celebrity endoresements work wonders for the brand, but a lot of them fall flat and donot end up influencing the buying behaviour of the consumer, either because it is a low involvement product or becoz the consumer has just not bought the concept.
According to me, they work for the only reason of idol worship in india. People look up to these larger than life celebrities, and trust them and get connected so easily. It just works in India.
I recall a movie “Halla Bol” where they take a dig on this concept. Anyways, can you recall one good endoresement which actually influenced your perception about the brand, and yeah, one ugly one too !
My pick would be – Sharukh for Pepsi and Harsha Bhogle for timex.
P.S – Thalaivar (for the ignorant, am referring to Rajinikanth) has never endoresed any product for the reason, he feels he would be misusing and monetizing the trust placed on him by his fans. One more reason why he is the superstar
