A friend of mine, who used to work for a head hunting firm has decided to take the plunge and open her own executive search firm. She asked me to help in the naming of the company, checking the availabliity of the .com domain and getting the google apps right.
Swayed by the ad in the times that morning, I chose to register the domain with Net4India and not the ever reliable godaddy.com
Must say, that they do a pathetic job. No wonder, we dont see any indian hosting provider in the list that google asks you to choose from while activating google apps !
To start with, the MX records couldnt be modified. The entire interface was pathetic and to top it, it doesnot let you save any changes. The calls to their customer care go answered and post a couple of hours, I manage to talk to their executive who promptly played ball.
This blog is hosted at Zdnet and i think they do a fabulous job. You constantly see their interface getting better with new features, and I guess they can well emerge as the leader in this space in India.
Any experiences of indian hosting ?

I have been seeing ads of weddingwow everyday in Deccan Chronicle, the leading newspaper of Hyderabad. Out of curiosity, checked out their site today and must say, was disappointed. I perfectly understand the “behind-the-scenes” activities of the launch of a eComm site, being in the same industry, but their homepage hardly stands up to the marketing efforts. Broken links is the least you expect on the homepage of a brand which is spending huge amounts in advertising. There are two approaches,
1. you get every aspect of your business ready and tested and then launch, running the risk of late goto market (similar to waterfall model)
2. you prepare yourself while already into the market and improvise (prototype model)
Whichever model you choose, i guess you need to deal with it carefully!

I was recently interacting with a company called 160/2. It has a very innovative space selling strategy. The concept is about sharing the space of the sms’s you receive from your friends. 80 char would be the message from your friend, and the other 80 would be an ad text. You would never delete a sms from a known person without reading it, and hence the visibility is high. Also, you dont feel intruded thanks to the personal msg that tags along.
In the new era of social participation, people start playing a major role in the making of a business. Now, we soon would start shielding power in a big way. All of us might infact start earning revenues out of it. For ex, I can sell my caller tune (the tone one hears when they call your mobile) to a company to be used as an ad in return for Rs40 extra recharge. Ad revenues on blogs has already started, and is one more classic example. So, i get to make money if i become a “key opinion leader” in social participation or if i am ready to “sell my private space”.
