observations of a startup entrepreneur

Add Your Comment

It has been about 5months, since i turned a full time enterpreneur and have launched www.buytheprice.com

For the starters, it is a b2c shopping portal, built on social platform that clubs demand for lower prices, all real time.

I thought, this was a right time to kind of look back and pen down my observations,

1. It feels like heaven – Read it carefully. It doesnot say “It IS heaven” :) The opportunity to pursue your passion is a blessing. Atleast you know that you are limited purely by your capabilities. So, if you are sitting on a great idea that you believe can make a difference, move your ass and take the plunge ! It is refreshing, and the journey will be great !

2. Rupee appreciates in value – I so nonchalantly used to sign bills tuning to thousands, at the various watering holes in hyderabad. Now, it has kinda become a luxury :) Not just coz i need to conserve cash, but i have new found wisdom that shows me a better and deserving need to be satisfied by that money.

3. I = team – This is how i have always worked, and my strength has always been my team. So, it is no different now but in a startup, the cost of each decision is high, so a great team = better and faster decisions !

4. Patience is a virtue – The world doesnot function and behave the way you want it to. Need to build trust first, and respect every moment of truth. It will yield results, but you need to tread and make it happen, not demand it.

5. Extra funds – While planning the set up, do all your maths but multiply the total by a 1.3 factor. Lotsa expenses unthought of, just crop up.

6. Network & Support – We wanted to create a fan page on facebook for our brand. Just then, we realized none of us knew fb ! Messages, updates, Fans, Pages was all a lil greek n latin. Moreover, we just werent this extrovert type who can network in a jiffy. Though i have kinda got the the hang of it now, i must be thankful to so many helping hands that came in to set it up.

Even to date, i keep getting calls and messages from people, who take btp as seriously as we do ! It goes a long way, and saying a mere thanks would be a disgrace. So, expect support from all the people you have known in ur life. It will happen.

Kasab – smirking at our generosity

I was reading a blog post that was making fun of special prosecutor, Ujjwal Nikam who flashed the V sign as he left the court. Their claim is that even a school kid would have got the same judgement. I couldnt help but laugh at the viewpoint.

The very fact that a trial of such grave crime, took such a long time, kind of pokes fun at our entire judicial system. In a bid to ensure pure justice, we have gotten ourselves into a tangle of petitions and escalations. We are just too soft hearted to put down an iron fist when needed, which actually explains the crime rate we face in India.

How many islam countries would actually have been investing in a 5Cr anda cell and a year of investigation for something as straight forward as this ? It is ridiculous to have been giving a terrorist so many rights.

To top it, there are certain people who dont believe in “punitive justice” but only “reformist justice”, that makes me speechless. Their cause may be right but we are not talking about a child who stole candies here.

I think the V sign he flashed depicts his victory over our generosity and benevolence shown to criminals. Justified indeed.

Domain control & hosting

Add Your Comment

A friend of mine, who used to work for a head hunting firm has decided to take the plunge and open her own executive search firm. She asked me to help in the naming of the company, checking the availabliity of the .com domain and getting the google apps right.

Swayed by the ad in the times that morning, I chose to register the domain with Net4India and not the ever reliable godaddy.com

Must say, that they do a pathetic job. No wonder, we dont see any indian hosting provider in the list that google asks you to choose from while activating google apps !

To start with, the MX records couldnt be modified. The entire interface was pathetic and to top it, it doesnot let you save any changes. The calls to their customer care go answered and post a couple of hours, I manage to talk to their executive who promptly played ball.

This blog is hosted at Zdnet and i think they do a fabulous job. You constantly see their interface getting better with new features, and I guess they can well emerge as the leader in this space in India.

Any experiences of indian hosting ?

You make it happen !

Add Your Comment

Well, that is the tag line of buytheprice.com that we are about to launch. You may read about it at http://www.buytheprice.com/blog

A lot of people are asking me about when the launch is. Yes, I must admit that it took a little longer than expected. But what is a plan, is everything goes as per it ? :p

The main reason being a certain lack of compromise on the design and technological features. Needless to say, that since this being different from a typical b2c portal, the backend was complex and took time to get it right.

Anyways, we would be launching it very shortly. Our launch marketing programs have begun.

Lets see !

A lot of my time these days is consumed by work on BTP. It certainly is exciting and i am also very anxious as we are getting close to the launch. The reviews have been good, and the response for our pre-launch buzz has been equally good. We got coverage in WATblog and Alootechie (links below)

WAT blog – http://www.watblog.com/2010/01/13/b2c-shopping-portal-buytheprice-com-soon-to-be-launched-will-focus-on-price-work/

Alootechie – http://www.alootechie.com/content/myzingo-plans-launch-a-b2c-shopping-portal-buythepricecom

The btp team is excellent, and is a great relief at time of pressure situations. One thing they need not learn is crisis management as it looks like they are born with that degree.

iPonder #6 – My 3 Gadgets !

I was chatting with a friend when we realized that we have quite lost the human touch….and are embracing machines in a big way ! Subtracting the time you snore, probably 70% of your time is spent with one of the below,

1. Mobile phone, 2. Laptop and 3. TV set.

Technology has definitely made life easier and more exciting, but it pretty much dictates our spend patterns of time and space. The reamining 30% only goes into the necessary daily doings of life like gulping down or commuting. I can only see it getting worse in the future, making a complete veggie out of us. i Ponder if it is time for a down turn of tech. What do you think ?

Why Rakhi Rocks !

I saw umpteen number of blog posts bashing up the entire concept and execution of the now infamous show “rakhi ka swayamar”. That by itself conveys the fact that it has achieved which any tv show would want – attention. This is not a post to glorify the program, but to see it in a different perspective and not shun it completely for invalid reasons.

1. TRP and Ad revenue – It doesnot matter if you watch it becoz u love it or becoz u hate it…what matters is whether u watch it or not. That way, it has certainly worked wonders. The TRP ratings are quite high which obviously means that the ad revenues pour in. In short, a success for the organizers if purely seen as just any other tv show.

2. Entertainment Vs Sensibility – Since when did the indian audience demand sense in the shows ? They need serials that tug at their emotional chords, reality shows which either a dark horse must win, or those with hot hunks and divas with attitude. You can make them to do all circus acts, or make them bitch about each other or make them laugh, cry, romance and wht not and we would gulp it all down with zeal and await with licking lips for more. Coz that is entertainment for us. We believe it and yes, we are most keen to know about other’s lives. Even if it is all staged, who cares ? It satisfies my daily dose of reality show!

3. Insult of the institution called marriage – For once, assuming that the entire show is indeed true and she ends up marrying one of those jokers, i dont see the entire execution as an insult to the institution of marriage. For ex, compare it with any typical arranged marriage setting that happens across households in india. Its just a larger than life and better version of the same drama that happens in the confines of a home. By any standard, rakhi would get to know more about the suitor than if she had agreed for an arranged marriage. So, it is bad but better than the more popular and accepted way of marriage.

4. Suitors – Coming to the heros who occupy the centre stage, you must be kidding if you feign ignorance about the sheer celeb power that exists in india. You must see the fan mail and phone calls that knock their homes. The instant mob that gathers in 2min on the news of a celeb in the neighbourhood, just to have a peek at them. So, if given a shot to actually wed one of them, it is only expected for people to apply in dozens. Just like how a sw engr seeks a gride/groom from IT industry, the suitors are also pretty much aspirants of the glamour industry. Thry either end up marrying a celeb or lose to gain their 2min of fame, giving interviews to local mags about their experiences.

5. Rakhi, the entertainer – Rakhi has never claimed to be a social activist nor an intelligent film maker. She asserts her item girl status and being an entertainer for profession. You gotta applaud her guts to entertain people across the world not just with her appearances in movies but also by  taking it home into her life ! How better can an entertainer get ! How more seriously can someone take their job ?

In short, its probably a marraige which actually ends up making money ! Unlike every other, where we spend a lot ! After all, the honchos at ndtv imagine are not dumb !

iPonder#5 – Drunken Flying

I have been caught a couple of times for zig zag trail in my car, but getting caught for drunken flying is taking it to a whole new level. 28 pilots have been found to have consumed alcohol prior to flying the planes, and kingfisher, being true to its name tops the list. Actually speaking, i know a few people who go drunk to their work place, but the worst damage they can do is to write code that is illegible to the computer. I have heard stories of surgeons who take a peg or two prior to performing their acts. While the near ones are praying outside the theatre, our hero would be busy gulping down some vodka and see the world in different shades.

Why they do it ?

1. You tend to get more gutsy to face the world
2. The world starts appearing better and beautiful
3. It is indeed thrilling, and you no more are a mere mortal
4. You feel more in control, though quite hypocritic
5. You dont get caught, unless some wise guy orders a sudden audit

What can be done to curb it ?

Actually speaking, I dont think it can be curbed.

Am waiting to see, if these pilots get to fly again ! If they do, they would do nose dives again for sure !
